Recently we published about the inspiring journey of Afroz Ali, Hena Kausar and their son Ali Afroz. How amazing people! Ali is a partially-sighted teenager who has just taken admission in the National Law University, Delhi. Ali topped the AILETS entrance exams in the differently-abled category. He also trumped many other entrance exams and secured admission in several reputed law colleges.
But, of course, Ali’s stride to academic excellence hasn’t been easy. And his parents Afroz and Hena played a great role in supporting his education.
Lack of screen-readable text books has been one of the most challenging problem for Ali. He uses text-to-speech software like JAWS for reading books on his computer. NCERT did provide some of their books in PDF format — but even these books were not navigable by the screen reader software. And most of the reference books were not even available in ebook format.
Ali’s father, Afroz, decided to take this challenge and he painstakingly converted all the required text books into screen-readable and navigable MS Word format. Afroz did this year after year as Ali progressed through schooling. He began this mission when Ali was in Class V. Afroz is a senior management executive in an MNC. Needless to say his professional life is demanding. But after coming back from office, Afroz would straightway go to his home computer and began scanning NCERT and other reference books for his son. He would then proof-read all the scanned material and make necessary corrections. Any mistake left by Afroz would lead his son to learn incorrect information. But Afroz would not allow it! Ali’s proven academic excellence is not just a testimonial of his own brilliance and hard work — but also it is an indicator of the scrupulous work done by Afroz.
Afroz and Hena did not keep these screen readable NCERT books confined just to Ali. They have been distributing these books for the use by visually impaired students. WeCapable salutes their spirit and as a small support in their efforts, we are hosting Ali’s Books on our server. Potential users of these books would be able to find these with more ease.
