UNCRPD Act 2016 in Hindi! Well, UNCRPD is not an Indian Act!

A significant number of people in India believe that UNCRPD is an Indian Law enacted in the year 2016. However, I would like to inform that there exist no such act as “UNCRPD Act 2016”. Today, in this article, I will tell you what gave rise to this misconception. I would also give you correct information about the UNCRPD and Act 2016 parts of it!

This confusion involves two separate entities: the UNCRPD and the RPWD Act 2016. Full form of UNCRPD is United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is an international treaty among hundreds of nations in the world. UNCRPD legally binds these nations to take measures for ensuring human rights of the persons with disabilities.

India is also a signatory of the UNCRPD. By signing and ratifying UNCRPD, India became legally committed to make laws and policies for ensuring the rights of Indian citizen with disabilities. To fulfill this commitment, India enacted the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016.
